How do I make a filled PDF form uneditable before sending it?
Save a separate flattened copy after checking the filled values; flattening removes the form controls that let recipients change those values. Keep the original form as a backup.
Flattening is useful when a form is complete and you want to share a fixed copy. It removes the interactive controls, so recipients cannot edit those fields as form fields. Keep the original interactive PDF in case you need to correct an answer later.
Make and check a copy
- Save a backup of the filled PDF.
- Flatten the form fields in a copy.
- Open the copy in a PDF reader and check every page, including the values and any signature marks.
- Send the checked copy and retain the original.
Do not flatten a certificate-signed document if the signature must remain valid. Adobe notes that saving a digitally signed PDF invalidates the signature. Ask the signer for a final copy when needed.
