Why does a signature or filled field disappear when I email a PDF?
A filled field can look different across PDF viewers because its visible appearance is part of the form field, not ordinary page text. Open the saved file in the app used to fill it and check that the values are still present.
PDF viewers draw interactive form fields from their field and widget data. The PDF reference describes a widget's appearance stream as the instructions for how that field is drawn. If the value is missing, first open the saved copy in the application where you filled it and check that the value is still there; then save a new copy from that application.
Before sending a signed PDF
- Keep an untouched copy of the file you received.
- Reopen the saved copy in a PDF reader and confirm the signature and field values are visible.
- If it has a certificate-based digital signature, do not flatten or edit that signed copy. Adobe says saving a digitally signed PDF invalidates its signature. Ask the sender for a corrected copy if the signature is missing.
For ordinary AcroForm fields, you can make a separate flattened copy with PDF Flattener. Check the downloaded file before sharing. Do not use this tool to preserve certificate signatures.
